Colombia

Bogota

When I mention to people I am going to Colombia, the first thing they ask is “oh you are going to snort some cocaine, or a similar comment: Well Colombia is also one of the largest exporters of coffee, but nobody asks me “so are going to get hyped up on coffee”?

As a city Bogota was very disappointing. We only stopped here because you can’t visit Colombia without checking out the capital. As I mentioned in my earlier blogs; Every country, the largest city the girls are snobs it’s the second biggest city, where everyone is nice, the same was true for Bogota, we were looking forward to Medellin which was supposed to be amazing.

We met a guy from Cartagena that was down to party, and he immediately wanted to hang out with us, mostly because were awesome, but also because he was alone running around trying to pick up girls and in much need of a wingman. He spoke English and immediately took on the role as our guide, our driver, and scout. In return we allowed him to use our suite to bring girls in, but he managed to chase them away, by pulling his dick out and slapping it on the girls shoulder, similar to the way the queen would knight a Nobel prize winner. He was also extremely paranoid and would freak out every time someone would approach the car, I wasn’t sure if this was a result of him knowing and us unaware about the dangers of the city, or the fact he was driving around with two gringos in the car and we were the equivalent of a moving target, but his paranoia was rubbing off on us.

This led to a very tense situation in a cab, where we arrived at our destination and some shady guys motioned to the cab driver while on a cell phone, and the cab driver nodded his head, at this point we completely lost it and started screaming “go go go, as if we were in an a military battle and the enemy just landed a grenade. The driver got really scared and just took off. We got to the next block and some other guys started running after the cab and we again screamed at the driver to get out of there. When we finally got to a safe neighborhood, we interrogated the driver as to what type of danger we just escaped, and he looked at us confused. Apparently those people were just waiting for a cab and were hoping to get in after we got out.

My friend wants credit for pulling off a little con on the flight to Cartagena. He first bought the tickets on some special for $50, he had a star alliance premiere membership which is the lowest level and not really entitled to anything, but the Colombians have obviously not been exposed to any type of levels and he managed to get us upgraded to business class.

We didn’t really do much in Bogota except hit a few clubs; we had an amazing experience in a restaurant outside the town which was a really fun place. The restaurant was decorated in a way what you would expect a Mexican hoarders garage looked like; if that Mexican had a really interesting sense of style and an affinity for trinkets and knick knacks stored in an enclosed space carved of wood. You need to refer to the pictures and videos for more details.

Cartagena

Cartagena is a five hundred year old city surrounded by a walled fortress, steeped in history, and ruins. It is a tropical climate set near the ocean, with sun and no beaches. We stayed at the nicest hotel in the city, and were upgraded to a two floor suite with a butler and treated like royalty. The only drawback just as every good thing in life comes with, was we were not allowed to bring any friends, guests into the room, so throwing a party in this spectacular room was “not possible” The policy was strictly enforced and we tweeted about it, had the corporate office of Sofitel contact us, but they wouldn’t make any exceptions.

We realized that every girl in this country was prone to prostitution and for the right price any girl would agree to go home with you. We met these students, they were law students in fact, and showed their student IDs and invited them to dinner. After a nice meal they started maneuvering the conversation towards an after-hours party, and she inquired if “we would take care of them”. I explained that I was not a sex tourist, and we dropped them off at the exact location where we met them in the old square. They then had the audacity to ask us for cab fare home, needless to say we explained to them the benefits of walking.

We had a very crazy adventure involving unbeknownst to us hookers, cocaine, drug dealers, shady tour guides, and unsuspecting tourists (us) We got pulled over by a team of cops and patted down, and didn’t have ID, flashes of scenes of me rotting in a Columbian jail while congressman in the US campaigned to have me released, while I slowly lost weight and my mind. The situation was resolved after slipping the cop a $20 bill. I wasn’t so much surprised at the level of corruption in the Police force, but was more surprised at the cheap rate I was able to buy him off for. Had I known I would have paid him much more, as a preventative measure.

Medellin

I have been to twenty one countries so far just THIS YEAR. When I mention this to anyone inevitably the first question they ask is “what was your favorite place”? I never really had a good answer since the places I have been to are so diverse and unique in their own way. After visiting Medellin I think I finally had an answer to that question. Medellin was most likely my favorite city if not in the top three. The city itself doesn’t have much in the way of history and culture, but more than makes up for it, in beauty, energy, and friendliness and warmth. The city has the most beautiful girls in the world, that are down to earth, warm and always eager to talk to you and make you smile. As an American I was a celebrity. Almost no one speaks English, and everyone enjoyed watching us stumble through our Spanish, stringing together words and sentences that bordered on absurd. You can easily walk over to any girl that’s as pretty as any Victoria Secret model, and say something like “olah chicah doma tu nombre” which means “hello girl, give me your number” and you will get the number as well as a smile as large as the increase in your self-esteem she just created. They melt at the sight of your blue eyes, and as a light skinned American, you are not just an exotic look, you also represent a country they love dearly. There are very few tourists, so there are not many people to perpetuate, the rude and loud American. In fact there are not many tourists at all, and they are welcoming to all. It is a poor country but very proud. The parties go on all night and it’s not uncommon to see people going out at five am.

We stayed the first two nights at the intercontinental. The country was abuzz since Madonna was performing, and coincidentally we got the room immediately next to her. There were security guards stationed outside our door, and they were angry because they thought they rented the entire floor. They left that night so we did not see her nor did we care.

We started conversations with anyone and everyone, and everyone was eager to teach us Spanish and spend time with us. We ordered food to go by basically telling the food “lets go” since that was the only words we knew. We partied every night and Colombians party more than anyone else in the world. They have a festival every other day, and they love to dance and be merry. We crashed a few corporate events, where families old, young , children and teens were dancing and jumping and singing out loud. We walked in to this company dinner with hundreds of people and the DJ had everyone dancing, it immediately put us in a crazy mood. Wherever we went people were just enjoying life, and we realized its really true, that “The best things in life really are free”

The last few nights we stayed in a place called the “Medellin Mansion”. This was a large house with rooms and turned into a house for English speaking visitors to visit and stay. The place was a 24- 7 party, and there was a parade of woman coming and going nonstop hoping to snag some foreign sugar daddy. The house was full of older ugly men that were able to get woman they would never dream of getting back home. There is a term called “sex tourist” and its exactly what it sounds like. We were invited to the birthday party of a 73 year old New Yorker that was there on vacation. He got a lap dance from three 20 year olds, and danced like he had Parkinson’s disease. He stood in one place and shook his body in a weird way that looked like he was trying to act out having a seizure. He was a really nice and funny man, but I couldn’t help feeling bad. Most people would be high fiving him and wishing they could be as agile and lucky at 73 to be surrounded by 21 year olds, but I was picturing myself at that age and I did not see it that way at all. I am hoping that I could somehow I could settle down, start a family and the only 21 year old I want to be dancing with are my grandkids at their wedding.
